The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing a rapidly escalating humanitarian crisis, particularly in the eastern provinces of North and South Kivu. Ongoing conflict has displaced millions, shattered essential infrastructure, and severely disrupted access to health care and protection services. Among those most affected are women and girls, who face heightened risks due to limited access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and the growing threat of gender-based violence (GBV).
Over 1.5 million women of reproductive age and more than 234,000 pregnant women are currently at risk, with many unable to access prenatal care, safe delivery services, or protection mechanisms. The collapse of critical SRH and GBV services further compounds the vulnerability of displaced populations and strains the capacity of overstretched local health systems.
In response, UNFPA is urgently appealing for US$42.3 million to deliver life-saving services to affected communities. This includes US$18 million for immediate emergency interventions — such as maternal health care, GBV prevention and response, and the distribution of dignity and reproductive health kits — as well as US$24.3 million to expand and sustain essential SRH and GBV services across the country.
This appeal is fully aligned with the priorities and objectives of the 2025 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) for the DRC, coordinated by OCHA in collaboration with humanitarian partners. UNFPA’s response emphasizes a rights-based, survivor-centered approach to ensure that women and girls can access the care, protection, and dignity they deserve, even in the most challenging circumstances.
